Different types of horse rugs
There are many different types and sizes of rugs. Thickly padded rugs, unlined rugs, waterproof or not, fleece rugs, fly rugs and much more. In this blog we will list them for you with indications when which blanket is suitable for a horse or pony.
Rain Rug
A rain rug, the name already betrays it; this rug protects the horse against the rain and is therefore waterproof. A good quality rain rug offers protection against rain and wind. Most rain rugs are available with 200gr lining, 100gr lining, a fleece lining or are unlined. Unlined is shown as 0gram. Winter rug
Just like rain rugs, a winter rug is wind and waterproof. The only difference compared to a rain rug is the lining. Winter rugs are thicker lined and therefore warmer. The lining of winter rugs can vary between 200 and 500 grams. Winter rugs, and also some rain rugs, are available with and without a neck piece. Stable rug
A stable rug, the name says it all, it is not waterproof and therefore only suitable for the stable. A stable rug can be perfectly combined with a rain or winter rug. In this way you create an extra layer = extra warmth but also waterproof because the rain or winter rug that you put over it is waterproof. A stable rug is available in different thicknesses ranging from 100 grams of filling to 500 grams of filling. Fleece rug
Another word for a fleece rugs is sweat rug. The name says it all. This rug is very suitable to use after work, when your horse has sweated. The blanket absorbs moisture and ensures that your horse does not cool down too quickly after training or after washing. Summer rug
A summer rug is a lightweight, airy, often cotton blanket for the horse. Because it is so airy, this blanket is suitable for the summer months. A summer rug is often used to protect against the sun and UV. This blanket is also extremely suitable during transport or to keep your horse clean. Fly rug
A fly rug protects the horse against annoying insects. It is a very light, fine-mesh rug, which means that the insects can hardly irritate the horse's skin. However, the very small mosquitoes can still sting through this. If the horse suffers from these mosquitoes, for example summer eczema, then only a normal fly rug is not sufficient. In this case, the horse needs protection from an eczema rug. Click here for the full range of fly rugs for horses. Eczema rug
An eczema rug is made of an airy fabric and completely covers your horse's body and neck. This blanket prevents the horse from being bitten by mosquitoes. When a horse has summer eczema, it is allergic to the stings of the cullicoid mosquito, which causes a terrible itching (eczema). An eczema rug largely prevents this and provides pleasant relief for your horse. Click here for the full range of eczema rugs for horses.
