Size chart explanation
Size Description
MHS This is the size at the top of the rug measured from a bit in front of the withers to the tail.
MHS This is the size at the bottom of the rug measured from the middle of the chest to the buttock.
MHS This is the measurement on the side of the rug measured from just behind the withers towards the abdomen.

Rug sizes per brand

Rug size according to height at the withers

Please note:

The chart above is purely indicative. A rounder-ribbed horse often needs a size larger than a slim-built horse in the same height. Think for example: Shetlander (round) - Miniature (slim) or Welsh (round) - Hackney (slim). If you are not sure of the size of the rug we strongly advise you to always measure it for certainty.

Water resistance

The water resistance of a horse rug is expressed in millimeters per m2, from 3000 mm/m2 a rug is guaranteed to be waterproof and is also sufficiently waterproof for protection during heavy rainfall. Our horse rugs can be distinguished in three levels in terms of water resistance.

Water resistance
Specification Water resistance
Up to 1000 mm2 Water-repellent
1000 - 3000 mm2 Waterproof
3000 - 5000 mm2 Guaranteed waterproof

Up to 1000 mm2 - Water-repellent rugs: These rugs protect against occasional showers and light drizzle. If a horse is standing in the rain all day with one of these rugs, the rug will let water go through.

1000 - 3000 mm2 - Waterproof rugs: The fabric of these horse rugs is waterproof, but the seams are stitched. As a result, water can leak through these joints with a large amount and / or long-term rainfall.

3000 - 5000 mm2 - Guaranteed waterproof rugs: These horse rugs are stitched in such a way that the risk of water leakage is minimal. To be fair, in extreme weather conditions, the combination of wind and driving rain means that water can always get under the rug, no matter how good the rug is.

Breathable

Many rugs indicate that they are "breathable". But what exactly does this mean? For the extent to which a horse rug is breathable, there is an international standard that is expressed in g/m2 24 hours and can be classified as follows:

Breathable
Specification Air and moisture regulating
Up to 2000 g/m2 Moderate
2000 - 4000 g/m2 Good
4000 - 5000 g/m2 Very good

Up to 2000 g/m2 – Moderate: These rugs are not made of special air- and moisture-regulating materials and will not absorb and drain much moisture in conditions where your horse is sweating. Rugs with moderate breathability can become clammy on the inside during days with a high humidity, making it appear that the rug is not watertight. On a warmer day when your horse may be sweating somewhat, the rug can become clammy on the inside. The rug can then not drain the surplus heat quickly enough, resulting in condensation forming on the inside of the rug.

2000 - 4000 g/m2 – Good: There rugs are made of special air- and moisture-regulating materials. These rugs are able to absorb and drain body moisture to a certain extent. With a high humidity or when it is warm outside, this rug drains the moisture itself. This prevents your horse from sweating and the rug from becoming clammy.

4000 - 5000 g/m2 – Very Good: These rugs are made of special air- and moisture-regulating materials. These rugs are able to absorb and drain body moisture. With a high humidity or when it is warm outside, this rug drains the moisture itself. This prevents your horse from sweating and the rug from becoming clammy. These rugs are therefore largely self-regulating and optimal in all weather conditions.
